Dr. Zamarudin Khalid and his neurosurgical team at Nangarhar Regional Hospital in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, successfully performed a posterior approach laminectomy and lesion excision on a 54-year-old female patient suffering from a myelopathic gait and severe neck pain. The procedure was remotely mentored by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jaweed using Vuzix M400, GlassVU, and RemoteVU technology.
A posterior midline incision and C5/C6 laminectomy exposed the C5 nerve root, revealing a partially extradural, intradural-extramedullary neurofibroma/schwannoma. The lesion was debulk-excised under direct vision using surgical loupes and Smart Glasses. The dura was closed watertight, a suction drain was placed, and the wound was closed in layers.
With remote supervision via Smart Glasses, intraoperative decision-making was enhanced, ensuring precision and safety. The surgery was completed successfully with no postoperative complications.
